Objectives

  • The project aims to contribute, at local level, to re-establishing the Pyrenees as a shared space for exchange and development between Béarn and Upper Aragon, and to highlight common Pyrenean characteristics through an emblematic regional event: Carnival.
  • The project is expected to encourage inhabitants of both territories to collaborate in preparing and celebrating Carnival, fostering a sense of shared space.

Dates : 01/09/2022 – 30/06/2023
Budget : 17 144 €

Project actions

  • Raise awareness of Carnival in schools: involving pupils in a project of this kind is a key element when seeking to strengthen a shared identity over the medium and long term.
  • Performance by a duo of traditional musicians, one from Béarn and the other from Aragon, who were responsible for transmitting Carnival dances and songs from both sides of the Pyrenees and introducing traditional instruments.
  • Mobilisation of young musicians from Aragon and Béarn as part of an artist residency, with the aim of developing a shared repertoire of traditional street music for Carnival.
  • Joint celebration of the Carnival (the arrival of the Béarn Carnival in Ansó could not take place due to weather conditions).

Results

  • A successful joint preparation:
Raising awareness of the carnival in schools in Ansó and Bedous: Aragonese and Béarnese dances and songs…
  • Creation of a shared repertoire of traditional street music adapted for the Carnival: 5 Aragonese and Béarnese musicians in residence.
  • Work focusing on theatre and language.
